Safety

Is it safe to meet people from friend apps? A simple safety checklist

Meeting strangers can be one of the best things you do this year. It also carries some risk. Here's a simple checklist to keep every meetup safe and fun.

In short
  • Most meetups go well, but no app can remove all risk. A few simple habits make a big difference.
  • Meet in public, tell someone where you are, keep your own transport, and never pay outside the app.
  • Watch for red flags: pressure to move somewhere private, requests for money, or pushy messages.
  • In an emergency in India, call 112 first. Then report it in the app.

Meeting new people through an app can change your social life. Most meetups go exactly as planned: good food, good conversation, maybe a new friend.

But you're meeting people you don't know yet, so a little care goes a long way. Here's a simple checklist for every meetup.

Before you go

  • Check the plan. Look at the host, the place, the time and who it's for.
  • Choose a public venue. Restaurants, cafés, parks and turfs. Not someone's home.
  • Tell someone. Share where you're going and when you'll be back with a friend or family member.
  • Plan your own way there and back. Don't depend on someone you just met for a ride.
  • Keep payments in the app. If anyone asks you to pay by cash or UPI outside the app, don't.

At the meetup

  • Stay in the public place shown in the plan.
  • Keep your drink and belongings with you.
  • Go easy on alcohol, especially the first time.
  • Don't share your home address, bank details or private information early on.
  • Trust your instinct. If something feels off, leave. You don't owe anyone an explanation.

After the meetup

  • Message your trusted person that you're home.
  • Take your time. You don't have to share your number or follow anyone straight away.
  • Report anything that felt wrong, even if it seemed small.

Red flags to watch for

  • Asking you to pay outside the app
  • Changing the venue to a private place at the last minute
  • Pushing you to drink more, or to leave the group with them
  • Asking for money, loans or financial help
  • Pushy, sexual or threatening messages
  • Refusing to take no for an answer

If you see any of these, leave, and report it.

If something goes wrong

  1. Get to safety. Move to a public place, near people, staff or security.
  2. Call 112 if anyone is hurt or in danger. It's India's emergency number for police, ambulance and fire.
  3. Women in distress can also call 181 or 1091.
  4. For online fraud or harassment, call the 1930 cyber crime helpline or report at cybercrime.gov.in.
  5. File a police report if a crime has happened. Keep messages and booking records.
  6. Report in the app with the names, place, time and what happened.

How BeSocialz keeps meetups safer

BeSocialz can't promise that every person is safe, and we're honest about that. Here's what we do and don't do:

What we do

  • A live selfie check for every account at sign-up, to confirm a real person is using it
  • House Rules every member agrees to
  • In-app reporting on profiles, posts, messages, hangouts and events
  • Host phone numbers are never shown to guests, and you talk in the hangout group chat
  • Payments through Razorpay, so card and bank details aren't stored by BeSocialz
  • Removing and banning members who break the rules, and working with the police when the law requires it

What we don't do

  • We don't run background checks
  • We're not present at meetups
  • Hosts are independent, not our employees
